Becoming a Volunteer

 Step 1:  Volunteer Self-Assessment

Determine if the American Red Cross of the National Capital Area is a good fit for you by completing a Volunteer Self-Assessment. Click here to start your self-assessment.

The American Red Cross of the National Capital Area provides humanitarian services to the people of: Fairfax, Montgomery and Prince George's counties; Fairfax and Falls Church cities; the District of Columbia; and the military communities of Andrews Air Force Base and Fort Belvoir.

If you wish to volunteer with one of our community chapters (Alexandria, Arlington County, Loudoun County or Prince William) within the National Capital Region, click here to view a listing of offices and contact information. If you would like information about chapters outside of our region, click here to find the chapter nearest you through our national American Red Cross web site.

Step 2:  Review Opportunities

Check out our Chapter’s VolunteerMatch web page for current volunteer opportunities that may interest you. Volunteer opportunities are constantly changing, so please check back for new openings! Click here to view current volunteer positions.

Step 3:  Register for Orientation

Sign up for a Volunteer Orientation at a Red Cross office close to you. At this orientation, you will learn more about the American Red Cross, fill out necessary paperwork and indicate what type of volunteer work you found in Step 2. Click here to sign up for volunteer orientation classes!

Step 4:  Complete the Background Check

The American Red Cross has established minimum standards for a successful background check for all of its employees and volunteers. Any Red Cross volunteers over the age of 18 are required to complete this background check. Detailed instructions will be provided to you during the Volunteer Orientation.

Step 5:  Become a Volunteer!

After your paperwork and background check have been submitted, you will be contacted by your department of interest to arrange an interview. This process can take an additional two to three weeks. The department will coordinate any additional training you might need and then you will begin your rewarding experience with the American Red Cross!

If you have any questions, please email to nccvolhr@redcrossnca.org or at 703-584-8719.

Thank you for your willingness to volunteer for YOUR American Red Cross.
