Basic HIV/AIDS Education & Prevention

To prepare instructors who can help participants in Red Cross HIV/AIDS community sessions build the skills they need to prevent HIV infection.


Prerequisites

  • Be at least 17 years of age.
  • Hold a current certificate (Cert. 3010) for the American Red Cross Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) or a current Health and Safety Services instructor authorization (F5736 or C3005).
  • Have passed the HIV/AIDS Facts Test within the last 12 months.


Learning Objectives

  • Understand the content and format of activity options in Modules 1 through 4 in the American Red Cross Basic HIV/AIDS Program: HIV Education and Prevention Instructor's Manual
  • Facilitate activities related to HIV prevention behavior in a factually accurate, nonjudgmental and culturally sensitive manner
  • Identify ways to use skill-building activities with adults and with young adults age 17 and older
  • Effectively facilitate skill-building activities that involve task groups, role-play, brainstorm, demonstration and practice
  • Identify and define three main factors that influence people to adopt and maintain prevention behavior
