American Red Cross of the National Capital Area Quickly Responds to DC Community Needs During Massive Power Outage

Washington, DC - On Tuesday, July 22, widespread power outages impacted nearly 1100 residents in Northeast D.C. when the American Red Cross of the National Capital Area staff and volunteers were notified, they immediately partnered with D.C.'s Department of Human Services and responded. Because a retirement community housing approximately 300 people was in the immediate vicinity, the Red Cross prepared to shelter those and other local residents in need. American Red Cross of the National Capital Area Participates with Pubilc Safety and Transportation Officials During the CapWIN Event with Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD)

College Park, MD - On Monday, July 28, American Red Cross of the National Capital Area Chapter staff and volunteers joined various public safety and transportation officials in providing a Capital Wireless Information Ned (CapWIN) briefing and demonstration for Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-Md) at the University of Maryland. The event presented examples of CapWIN's current operating progress, its benefits and accomplishments, and future plans with program growth to enhance information-sharing in real-time when managing planned events or unforseen crisis occurring within the region. Fairfax, VA - On Monday, October 27, American Red Cross of the National Capital Area hosted a tour within the Chapter's Regional Disaster Coordination Center (RDCC) for the Emirates Foundation. The United Arab Emirates government and the Emirates Red Crescent are seeking to build a regional disaster coordination center, and visited the National Capital Area's RDCC to see first-hand how the center is staged for staffing and equipment, prepared to handle regional emergency needs in the midst of a disaster, and also an understanding of how vital technology and communications enables staff to work with partnering agencies. The National Capital Area remains committed to assisting with emergency preparedness locally and internationally.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - On Friday, February 15, American Red Cross of the National Capital Area staff and volunteers delivered two shelter-ready trailers to the Unified Communications Center on Martin Luther King Avenue in Southeast, DC. The trailers, stocked with supplies used in the event of a natural or man-made disaster, are two of 48 trailers purchased with funding from the UASI (Urban Area Security Initiative) Grant.
