Volunteers Honor Dr. King with a "Day On"

Red Cross, Community Partners Use Time Off to Give Back

The American Red Cross of the National Capital Area's volunteers and community partners used Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to touch the lives of almost 2,500 people throughout the DC-Metro Area.

The day's highlights included:

  • Montgomery County Youth volunteers teaming up with 80 volunteers from HopeWorldwide to go door-to-door passing out fire prevention and preparedness information in communities that had recently experienced a fire. The teams braved the frigid temps and reached 998 households!photo
  • At Anacostia High School, Red Crossers George Pack and Dyeva Foster led a project with Service for Peace volunteers that welcomed 1,200 members of the Southeast, DC, community. George and Dyeva conducted five Community Disaster Education presentations informing attendees about Red Cross disaster preparedness and prevention.
  • Accenture Consulting Group and Red Cross volunteers and staff - 125 in all - took to the task of screening and sorting cards at Chapter Headquarters in Fairfax to de distributed to our Wounded Warriors. After a day's work, 60,000 cards were ready to be sent to military hospitals all over the nation!

The American Red Cross of the National Capital Area would like to thank the volunteers, the corporate and community partners and the family and friends that made Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2008 a true "Day On."
