The American Red Cross of the National Capital Area offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities with new positions opening all the time. Unless otherwise noted the volunteer opportunities listed below are available at all chapter locations.

Emergency and International Services
Disaster Action Team (DAT) Member: Trained disaster volunteers are on-call to respond to the scene of a fire or other emergency in order to provide aid and comfort to disaster victims. The volunteers are on-call on a daytime, overnight or weekly basis.

Community Disaster Education Presenter: Volunteers teach disaster preparedness to schools, businesses and organizations.

Armed Forces Emergency Services Caseworker (Fort Belvoir only): Trained caseworkers provide assistance with sending emergency messages to military personnel and their families.

Armed Forces Emergency Services Military Briefing Volunteer: Volunteers present information to members of the U.S. Armed Forces prior to their deployment regarding the services that the Red Cross provides to military personnel and their families.

International Social Services Tracing Volunteer: Trained volunteers help locate missing family members separated by armed conflict or disaster.

International Social Services Committee Member: Members educate the local international community on the work of the American Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Health and Safety Services
Health and Safety Instructor: As a trained and certified Red Cross instructor, individuals teach cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first aid, how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED), water safety and/or life guarding courses. (Volunteers who make a commitment to teach for the Chapter will be reimbursed for their training.)

Health and Safety Community Outreach Volunteer: Volunteers educate the community about the classes.

Youth Services
Youth Internship Opportunities

Youth Task Force: YTF is a student-led leadership team meets monthly to plan and implement innovative community projects which provide National and International Humanitarian Relief through fundraising and awareness events. YTF is a team of youth ages 12 – 18. (Adults are also welcome to contact us and find out more about becoming a Youth Task Force Sponsor.)

Red Cross Youth Club Sponsor: Adult sponsors host and lead students of all ages in service learning activities designed to promote positive changes in their communities and schools.

Youth Leadership Development Conference Delegate (YLDC): YLDC delegates are selected to participate in a week-long leadership development training in the summer. Senior High School students are encouraged to apply for YLDC. Adult volunteers can also assist with the planning and implementation of YLDC.

Youth Courses Instructors: Youth Course Instructors can be trained to teach basic first aid, accident prevention and water safety classes to youth grades K - 6.

Community Services
Shoppers Program Volunteer (Montgomery Office only): Through this grant-funded program, volunteers help seniors and homebound individuals shop for groceries, helping to maintain the nutritional well being of community members.

Hospital Volunteer (Fort Belvoir and the District): Volunteers provide a variety of services to enhance patient care at DeWitt Army Hospital at Fort Belvoir, Virginia and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in the District.

Blood Services Volunteer: Help escort blood donors through the blood donation process at one of the numerous blood donation centers across the area.

Financial Development (Fairfax/Falls Church Office)
Retail Volunteer: Help support Yesterdays' Rose Thrift Store in Fairfax, the proceeds of which benefit the Red Cross. Volunteer opportunities include processing donations, arranging merchandise racks and displays and even running a cash register. DISCOUNTS ON MERCHANDISE available to volunteers!

Marketing and Communications
Public Affairs Volunteers: Work with the media to inform the public about what Red Cross services are being provided during a disaster response.

Information Technology (Chapter Headquarters)
Communications Technician: Will work with users, spreadsheets and database tools to manage telecommunications operation, deployment, maintenance and contact notification for different communications user groups.

Technology strategic analyst: Will analyze on-line surveys, work with Visio network diagrams and use both Word and powerpoint to manage projects in support of technology strategic planning.

Database analyst: Will analyze, maintain and develop the Chapter’s SQL databases and customized Crystal Reports.

Network Technician: Will be involved in datacenter move, equipment repair, computer installation and maintenance, migration to Windows 2000 Active Directory and Exchange 2000 implementation.

Operations (Chapter Headquarters)
Reception/Operations Volunteers: Help greet visitors in person and on the phone at the reception desk and assist marketing chapter merchandise. Volunteers can help with delivering supplies and mail to the different area offices.
